Who’s Minding the Gallery?: Delma Tayer

Delma Tayer

1977-1987

Delma’s twenty- five year career at the Yakima Valley College began in 1963. Her career reflected her passion for art as she taught English, Art History and the Humanities, and was the Dean of Arts and Science.

Delma retired in 1990 and became a full-time artist. Although her formal training was in abstract expressionism, she has not been confined to that style. Delma has worked and experimented with most mediums including but not limited to oil paint, acrylic, watercolor, and handmade rice paper Delma purchased herself while in Japan with her son to create some of her beautiful collage pieces.

Delma began painting in the early 60s. After retirement, Delma converted a storage building on her property into a pottery and painting studio, where she has since spent most of her hours happily indulging in her art. Her first formal presentation of her artwork was a group show in the Wenatchee Gallery, arranged by her college instructor, Sarah Spurgeon, in the early 60’s. Since then, Delma has been regularly exhibiting paintings and pottery in various galleries around Washington State. Delma earned two Master’s degrees at Central Washington University as a Ford Foundation Scholar, on in English and the other in Art. With a major in painting and drawing, and a minor in sculpture. On a sabbatical, Delma later earned the required course credits for the MFA degree. In 2004, Delma was invited to the Larson Gallery to have a Forty-Year Retrospective Exhibition of both painting and pottery. Delma has received several awards and honors during her many years as an artist.

Delma was also involved with the Yakima Herald-Republic, writing an art criticism column.  Although she has retired from teaching and directing, Delma says she will never retire as an artist.
