April 3 – May 2, 2009
Larson Gallery announces the opening of the 36th National Photography Exhibition. The exhibit opens April 3, 2009, with a reception from 5—7:30, and continues through May 2. Awards will be given at 6:30pm on the day of the reception with approximately $3.000 in prize money.
The 36th National Photography Exhibition is a juried biennial exhibition featuring traditional and experimental photography, both digital and film, from around the country. This year’s exhibition saw 434 entries from 141 artists in 20 states and the District of Columbia. The majority of the entries were from Washington. This year’s juror, Ellen Garvens, accepted 102 entries from 81 artists.
Ellen Garvens, this year’s juror, is a Seattle photographer and artist. Garvens has explored the fusion of photography with other media. Though photography has always been a key element in her art making, her photographs have become sculpture, drawings and artist books.
Garvens received a BS degree in Art from the University of Wisconsin and an MFA degree from the University of New Mexico. She has received a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship, a National Endowment for the Arts individual Fellowship Grant and an Artist Trust / Washington State Fellowship.
Her work has been reviewed in Arts Magazine, Art on Paper, Sculpture Magazine, The Village Voice, New Art Examiner, The New York Times, Creative Camera- London, and SF Camerawork. Garvens has artwork in collections at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin, Ohio, and Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. Ellen lives and works in Seattle, Washington and teaches at the University of Washington.
