“My art is an exploration of the physical effects of oil paints on a hard, smooth surface (glass). My paintings expose the gorgeous nature of chaos and fractals, turbulence and laminar flow, the familiar in the strange and invite the viewer to zoom in close to reveal their secrets. To better show the details, I build a light panel that illuminates the pieces from behind.

Additionally, I take high-resolution macro photographs of the paintings which I crop, clean up and color enhance to create prints that show striking examples of the endless possibilities found within the paintings.”

Rock was born and grew up in Yakima… a long time ago. He is an East Valley grad, a Vietnam vet (US Navy, 1969-1972), a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Philippines 1988-1990) and a retired ESL professor at Columbia Basin College in Pasco (1990-2016). He holds a BA/Art from the University of Washington and an MA/TESOL from, the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
As an artist, he focuses primarily on oil painting on glass to discover the magical world of fractals and making macro photographs of his paintings to expose new visions derived from them. His paintings are participatory in that he invites the viewer to zoom in close with a magnifying glass to see the amazing details found there.  His work has been presented in numerous shows around Washington state and is held in collections around the world. He is a Burning Man artist as well and has built many large, interactive installations out in the desert.
He now operates the Wind Watcher Studio in downtown Kennewick, WA where he explores the mysteries of painting on glass and the joys of macro photography.
